A rose seedling grows up

The seedling celebrated below joined the rose kingdom on April 4, 2014, when I saw it nudge above the soil surface in its dedicated small pot.  You can follow its development by re-visiting this "page" every now and then.

The interesting thing about this seedling rose is that its mother plant was also a seedling, the one which I named 'Red Galaxy' and is registered as such with the American Rose Society.  There are many photos and much discussion about 'Red Galaxy' in the main body of this blog.

The two photos taken on June 22, 2016 show that this seedling has some inherent "volatility" -- notice the striping on two of the blooms (the mother plant, 'Red Galaxy', exhibited its own volatility via spotted blooms).  On August 31, 2016 I moved the plant to the big rose bed; the small test bed was located too close to a towering cedar tree which was stunting the seedling's growth.  Note from the photos taken on August 31, 2016 that the seedling is now situated next to its mother plant --  'Red Galaxy'.

The rose survived the following Winter after being transplanted the last day of August, 2016.  It gradually regained strength, as shown in the photos of 2017.  It even produced another striped bloom -- see the close-up photo of July 3 (although it's just a single stripe, that's OK with me).   Any residual shock from being transplanted is gone in 2018, as the rose is now beginning to thrive.  This is evident in the photo of October 19, where the top bloom is at a height of 3 feet, and the plant is 4½ years old.  Growth continued unimpeded in 2019, and the plant is maintaining its vigor.  The photos this year were taken in the evening in order to reduce glare on the rich red blooms.

The seedling celebrated its 6th birthday in 2020, and has become a healthy adult rose bush.  From its growth habit so far, I think its adult height will remain at 3 to 4 feet.  It is a handsome rose bush, as you can see in the photos below.  Its permanent position in the rose bed is next to its mother plant, 'Red Galaxy'.

The growth of this rose is documented in reverse chronological order; current year is on top, and prior years below.
